Technical Overview & Use Cases

This dictionary tool queries the Free Dictionary API (dictionaryapi.dev), an open-source API aggregating data from multiple English language lexicons including Wiktionary. It returns structured data including phonetic transcriptions (IPA notation), audio pronunciation files, part-of-speech classification, multiple definitions ranked by frequency, real-world usage examples, and semantic relationships (synonyms/antonyms). The tool parses this structured response and renders it in a clean, card-based layout.

Privacy & Security Guarantee

This tool is part of the FAK LAB ecosystem, founded by Faizan Ahmad Khan Khichi. The dictionary makes API requests to fetch word data (necessary for comprehensive definitions), but only the searched word is sent — no personal information, browser fingerprint, or usage history accompanies the request. Your vocabulary research patterns remain completely private.

Frequently Asked Questions

What languages are supported?

This tool currently supports English only. The underlying API provides comprehensive English language data including American and British English variations, phonetic transcriptions, and audio pronunciations from multiple dialect sources.

Why is pronunciation audio not available for every word?

Audio recordings are sourced from volunteer contributions and linguistic databases. Common words typically have audio available; rare, technical, or newly coined words may lack recordings. When audio is unavailable, the phonetic transcription (IPA) is still displayed for pronunciation guidance.

Can I look up phrases or idioms?

The dictionary is optimized for single words. Multi-word phrases and idioms may return "not found" as they're cataloged differently in lexicographic databases. For phrases, try searching the key word within the idiom to find related definitions and usage contexts.
